Fashion and beauty is certainly an exciting area to work in, but I sometimes find myself wondering if I would be better off changing my career altogether. After all, the thought of spending the rest of my life working alongside people who are constantly backbiting (or openly bitching!) about one another isn’t all that appealing. It does get a bit much sometimes and I will often find myself daydreaming about all kinds of alternative jobs…

However, the big question is ‘what would I choose to do with my life?’ I have always had a real love for clothes (right from being a little girl), so I’ve never really spent any time learning any different skills. Even so, this still doesn’t stop me from wondering about a change of career. And (if I am going to be completely honest about it) I find myself thinking about it all more and more frequently…

But what would I choose to do if I ever did decide to embark on some amazing new career??? You see, there are actually two very different ways of looking at this dilemma… I could either scare myself silly by worrying about how very many options I have on the career front or I could choose to view the whole business as something unbelievably new and exciting! Fortunately, because I am such a positive kind of girl, I would opt to see it all from the latter aforementioned vantage point.

The options may be infinite, but that is exactly why the whole ‘new job hunt’would be such a massive buzz; I could actually consider just about any type of career in the world (except perhaps for brain surgery, quantum mechanics or fine art if I am going to keep things within the realms of realism…). But just think about how many jobs there that I really could realistically consider – pest control Blackpool, mobile car washing, managerial work or perhaps my very own mini cab service!!!

So, there you have it; there are plenty of other jobs for me to choose from and the whole business simply comes down to one single thing… me. Unless I am prepared to take the leap and try my hand at something new, then I will continue to work in the fashion industry for the foreseeable! And that means that I am no nearer to changing my career than I was when I first started writing this blog post.

Oh, how frustrating!

Last summer I went on an exchange trip after seeing them advertised on display stands at school, I swapped lives for two months with a student in Canada, it was an excellent opportunity to meet new people and see how I would survive in an alien environment.

The experience was amazing and it gave me a chance to see how this guy lived, who he was friends with and what kind of activities he was involved in. It was like living someone else’s life, I was staying in his room in his house with his family and I had never ever met the guy!

Before I left home my parents had made sure I had everything I needed for the trip, in case disaster decided to strike. I had no bank card or anything at that point so they gave me some travellers'cheques and cash to keep me going and I was planning on finding a part time job whilst I was there.

Everything was going great until I lost my bag when I was watching a basketball match one evening. I reported it to the police straight away and they said they would let me know if anything was handed in. They never called back so I assumed the bag was gone for good. It had everything in it, all my travellers'cheques and the last bit of cash I had left.

I thought I was doomed. My exchange family were so helpful, they told me about these free prepaid cards you could sign up for, and they didn’t cost you anything. When I started looking in to them I found loads available, and I ordered myself one after explaining my situation to them; they were so helpful and the service was excellent. They said they would make sure I received it immediately.

True to word the card arrived in two days time, and my exchange family subbed me until then. My mum and dad were able to put credit on to my new card over the phone. I was so lucky; I didn’t know what I was going to do. I am really thankful that my exchange family knew about these free prepaid cards and remembered them in an emergency. Now I don’t go anywhere without it, just in case. I even signed up for a second card that I keep in a safe place, always best if you are like me and lose things easily!

Staring at my timber window frames the other day – I was doing the very boring job of painting them – I started to wonder about my ex. We’d been split up for six months and the break-up had been horrible, but still, there I was pretending that wood was really interesting. That I didn’t still love and miss my ex. Did it work? Not in the slightest. And that’s maybe because I forgave too quickly at the beginning. I was still latching onto that hope and had never really gotten angry about him like many people said I should have done.

Still, if there’s one thing wooden window frames are good for it’s giving splinters. Sure enough, a big one through the thumb got my hand throbbing and me thinking about blood and pain instead.

…do you still love them like you did?

So, as it goes, how do you know if you should go back or stay away? Here are a few words to help you decide (although trust me, I am not an expert…):

1) Did you break up for a good reason? If you broke up because your ex betrayed you, broke your trust or did something just downright malicious – like, I don’t know, dump you by text on Christmas eve for example – then let’s be honest: if that happened to a friend of yours you would tell them never to go back.

 2) Did you get closure? Sometimes it’s good to go back just to get this, so that when you are ready you can then move on with your life.

3) When you think about all the bad stuff, do you still love them like you did? If you do then maybe it’s time to swallow your pride and get in contact after all. The choice is yours so don’t let me persuade you! (Ps have a good hard think, because the pain of this all going wrong again is likely to be much worse than just a timber wood splinter!)

When it comes to finding a date, there have never been more possibilities and ways to make it happen. No matter what walk of life you come from, it’s easy to meet people…unless you have issues with confidence for example. And if that’s the case then the idea of going on a blind-date might feel about as possible to you as taking a casual trip to the Moon…

But, here’s the thing – and this links in with a post that you can read by clicking HERE – anyone, with a bit of luck can make themselves more attractive. It really doesn’t matter what figure you have, or how much hair you have, or whether or not you’re happy with your chest: everyone can make steps to improve on what they have got. These come in very handy when meeting a total stranger for the first time:

There are also countless resources – such as on Youtube – which can point you in the right direction…

1) Do ask your close friends for an honest opinion: most people are happy to give you their opinion, but many people need a bit of coaxing to give you the real answer. Seek this answer out! No matter what you are asking about, it’s important to know the truth about that new hairstyle or dress you want to buy but just aren’t sure.

2) Make sure you take advantage of all the help that is out there: there are countless TV shows which can advise you on what to wear with what shaped body. There are also countless resources – such as on Youtube – which can point you in the right direction with make-up. Nobody really has a good excuse to get it totally wrong, right?

 3) Don’t be afraid to go for something new and dynamic: playing it safe is often seen as boring, and at least if you’re not so confident it will be a good talking point with you and your new date! That has got to be a good thing.

The last thing you need when you have just turned thirty and in the middle of a mid life crisis is the hassle and trouble of trying to claim Ski compensation! Not so long ago a group of me and the girlies decided that we would take a relaxing and fun skiing holiday to the French Alps. Take in the scenery, meet the man of our dreams and kick back and relax….

Me and the girls decided to go all out and treat ourselves to a stay in the beautiful Le Grand Coeur and Spa Hotel which is an exceptional retreat nestled in the mountains. We knew we had made the right choice when we walked into the grand and stately piano bar situated in the centre on the hotel. The rooms were nothing short of amazing, the views were incredible, you could see the mountains towering high into the heavens and the scenery was truly breathtaking! Everything was going great we had met some cute guys at the hotel restaurant and was planning a day trip to some of the beautiful lakes in the area, when before I knew it I was being rushed to the hospital via helicopter! Trust this to happen to me!!!

An unaware skier flew straight into me sending me flying down the slopes…resulting in a broken ankle! I could barely move or walk so clearly the holiday was over. I was devastated all my friends went off with the guys on their day trip while I sat in the hotel feeling sorry for myself. Luckily I managed to claim compensation for the accident when I returned home so all was not lost! I managed to claim back the money I spent on the trip and treated myself to a new winter wardrobe, new clothes always make me feel better.

I read a frightening article the other day on what is happening to the NHS in the UK. Of course I’d heard something about some changes the government were thinking of introducing to the organisation, but I until last week I had no idea what the changes might mean for our hospitals and GPs. I know we have to save money considering the Labour government went on a thirteen year spending spree and didn’t think ahead about what might happen, but the NHS is a service that this country cannot afford to lose.

There has been an increase in the number of social care jobs being advertised online so I cannot understand why the government is saying that the NHS must save more money. Now I know the Conservatives stated that they would ring fence the NHS before the election last year, but I don’t think they truly had any idea on how empty the public purse was beforehand. Neither did the Liberals and both parties never expected to be working together in government too. How funny times can be. Yet I have taken the trouble to study exactly what these proposed changes to the NHS will mean.

For a start it seems that private companies are being invited to tender for some services that the NHS would ordinarily provide. Does anyone else see us heading towards the kind of healthcare system the US has? On the other hand there is a lot of back office administrative staff that I believe could be done away with. Whilst that sounds harsh and cruel to the people currently working those jobs, the question has to be asked on how essential their positions are to the running of the hospitals and trusts they work for. The Labour government spent thirteen years increasing public sector jobs with little or no regard as to whether those roles were actually required. Unemployment may have been low, but public spending was huge. Whichever government had won last year would have had to make cuts to the budget. It was just unfortunate that the NHS has been targeted to make savings.

Care jobs seem to be more widely available now when surfing the internet. To me that isn’t all that surprising considering the rise in patient numbers and the lack of staff on hand to deal with them. Also as our population is living longer these types of jobs are going to increase even more. Whether the government will continue to fund those jobs remains to be seen considering the austerity measures already in place.

Private companies may have to pick up some of the slack and properly controlled I can see how this would be possible. The only concern I have is when I look at the state of the railways up and down the country. With so many different operators looking after different lines and stations, it’s a wonder any trains run at all. The NHS could end up in a similar state.

People moan about turning 40, 50, 60…then they accept it. They get on with their lives. They start worrying about what’s on TV and if there will ever be a better pension scheme.

Me? I’m worrying about the fact I just turned 30. It happened recently and wow do I feel punished…

Because 30 is the worst of all the ages to turn, and here’s why:

For a woman – and I only know how it is for me and my friends, so this is only my opinion – it’s hard making the leap from twenties to thirties. The twenties are so alive. You’re out with friends, drinking in bars, and working and feeling like you’re at the top of the best-body-in-the-office table.

When you hit 30 you’re struck by the sudden horrendous realization that actually, there are girls younger than you with better bodies and more…time. Girls who, when they jump up and down, everything stays more or less in the same place and does not make a slapping sound.

turning 30 is tough: your hormones are more all over the place than they ever have been

Suddenly, being 30 feels like a total drag. Worse, it feels very sinister indeed. As though someone is lurking around the corner with a gun that can give you a dozen wrinkles with just one sordid pull of the trigger.

Another bizarre thing about turning 30 is that you share very little in common with…anyone, it feels like. For example, anyone over 32 feels very old to me, and anyone younger than me probably is dreading turning 30 and so doesn’t want to know me! OK, so that’s all a bit dramatic, but actually that’s another good reason why turning 30 is tough: your hormones are more all over the place than they ever have been. Faced with the onset of your maternal years vanishing right before your eyes, you’re left thinking Oh God, this is it, the clock is ticking faster than ever!

I speak only for myself, of course, single old me. Other people have relationships but I just seem to have my moaning old self right now. I think Grrrrrrr is the word. I need me some Sex and the City on DVD and a cold pizza and a bottle of wine. That ought to do it! (But I had better not…work tomorrow and when they ask me something important I don’t want to blurt out Asics Gel Kayano …or something else equally abstract. See? I’ve turned all professional, quick as a flash!)

When I was a teenager, in the early years, I loved high heel shoes. To me they signified taste, style and elegance. I spent waaaaay too much money on them. I won’t say here how much…but it was a lot of money, and for a while I’d even say I was addicted. I just HAD to have them, they were more important, even, than food.

Then, when I was around 20, I can vividly remember seeing a documentary about women who had spent their whole lives in high heeled shoes. It was shocking to say the least. When their feet came on screen it looked as though someone had smashed their big toes sideways with a massive heavy hammer.

That was the day it all changed for me. I decided enough was enough and started wearing flat shoes. It was depressing at first, as few other people were doing the same. But it was comfier, and so I was happy about that.

Then, one day, I walked outside and it was literally as though I was in an alternative reality. In this world I was now in, everyone was wearing and loving flat shoes. My prayers had been answered once and for all!

And it wasn’t a fad like I first thought it would be, it wasn’t like hybrid cars or shell-suits. And it still isn’t. Girls all over the world still love their flat shoes and thank goodness!

We should be able to learn from the mistakes of the past. I for one would like to keep my feet as they are.
